Yesterday, the speedometer cable snapped. So while doing diagnostics I repaired the front fender which was becoming misaligned and rubbing the tire. At the same time I adjusted the air mixture and gave the bike a general tune up. It deserved it after 612 miles.
Today, while riding to work, I hit a pothole at about 30mph. The front fender snapped and broke off the bike. As I turned the bike around to pick up the fender, I pull the hand brake (pretty hard). Some how the force pulled the front wheel completely out of alignment and is resting against the fork. Shiat!!!!
I managed to free the wheel so that I could get to work but now I can't use the hand brake in fear of the same thing happening.
Sad part is that I'm starting to think that the general quality of these bike a really questionable and I don't feel safe riding it.
Anyone have suggestions for repair?? I have not start taking the thing apart to see what has been damaged.

Sorry to hear about the problems. It sounds like you may have damaged it at some previous time (with the fender not being aligned and all). Are you sure your axle isn't bent? I can't see how the tire would rub against the fork without it being bent or something. I would suggest taking the wheel off and carefully inspecting everything. Let me know if you need any further help. I could take the front wheel off of mine and take pictures if you need to see how one in good condition fits together.

Ok, outside of the pothole, it looks like the wheel problem was self induced. While adjusting the fender alignment, I don't think I properly, torque the linkage threading the fender. Actually, I didn't realize it was linked. So, it looks like it was my bad.
The axle looked fine. Is you fender fasten anywhere other that at the tip of the fork? I noticed a couple of holes on the inside of the fender wall at the top of the fork but no screws or anything that fastens it. I think this was why my fender became misalign. Also, after inpecting the fender I notice some tire rub from bottoming out on the side as well as the top. You have this problem?
I ordered the fender and speedometer cable from bikebandit.com, they had my color.
Do you have any experience with changing the cable?
While, I got your ear, I've been looking for a banana seat for my bike. Do you know if the passport c70 seat and rack fits? I'm 6"1 and sittin on that front seat, my legs pierce the leg sheild. I really need one bad now that I lost the back seat. The clip on that holds the back seat suck. The seat fell off while I was riding, i didn't even notice it.
Thanks for the help.

OK on our bikes (Toptank GLs), the front fender is attached by 2 bolts on each side of the fork. No where else. As for your seat, I read in another post here that someone bought a long banana seat at www.bmikarts.com. I believe it was the 24" one made for minibikes. Finally, changing a speedo cable is easy...nothing to it. Just loosen holding screw on the hub of the wheel and it pulls out. The other end just screws into the back of the speedometer. Hope this info helps.
